After two years of intensive renovation, the Prague Planetarium is presenting itself in a completely new light. Featuring the largest LED dome of its kind and a fully digital system, it is setting new standards in knowledge transfer.
The Prague Planetarium is reopening its doors to the public following a comprehensive modernisation. The result is striking: it is now the world’s first fully digital LED planetarium, boasting the largest dome of its kind. The grand reopening for visitors is scheduled for the weekend of 14–15 June 2025.
The total investment amounted to 300 million crowns. Around 200 million was allocated to constructing the new dome, including the LED technology, while the remainder was spent on building upgrades and modernisation – such as new visitor areas, improved ventilation, and more efficient climate control. The entire project was financed from the budget of the City of Prague, which also owns the planetarium.
The opening weekend has been planned to accommodate the expected crowds. A special 20-minute presentation will be shown several times throughout the day, including a night-sky simulation and demonstrations of the new technical capabilities. On Saturday 14 June, the planetarium will also participate in Prague Museum Night and remain open late into the evening. “What visitors can expect is truly unique. Everyone who has seen the system so far has been thoroughly impressed,” says Planetarium Director Jakub Rozehnal.

From a technical perspective, the planetarium is a global pioneer. The new LED dome comprises approximately 45 million diodes across more than 12,000 custom panels – creating a visual experience that closely resembles the real night sky. The panels deliver up to 100 times the brightness of conventional projectors, enabling levels of contrast previously unachievable with classic planetarium systems. This produces a convincing 3D effect, even on a flat 2D surface. In addition, the LED technology offers a lifespan roughly four times longer than traditional systems.
Alongside high-quality fulldome films on space and astronomy, new creative formats are in development. Notably, the world’s first puppet film in fulldome format – Hurvínkova vesmírná odysea (Hurvínek’s Space Odyssey) – is set to premiere this autumn.
With its modernised facilities, Prague is not only unveiling a cutting-edge technical attraction but also establishing a significant new centre for science education and cultural engagement.
