SC Pendolino Košičan returns to its Prague – Košice route

The interruption was due to ETCS upgrades and certification of the trains for international operation

The SuperCity train Pendolino Košičan now runs again on its established route between Prague and Košice. After a technical pause for the installation of the European Train Control System (ETCS), passengers can once again travel quickly and comfortably from the Czech Republic to the northern and eastern regions of Slovakia.

Following a temporary pause, the SuperCity train Pendolino Košičan is back on its proven connection between Prague and Košice. Operated by Czech Railways (ČD) and the Slovak Železnice Slovenskej Republiky (ZSSK), the train offers the fastest and most comfortable way to travel from Bohemia and Moravia to the northern and eastern regions of Slovakia.

Since last July, the Pendolino trains on the Prague – Košice route had been temporarily replaced by other units due to installation, testing, and certification of the European Train Control System (ETCS) on all units.

All Class 680 Pendolino units are now equipped with ETCS and certified for international traffic. Their operation on the route Prague – Olomouc – Ostrava – Žilina – Poprad-Tatry – Košice can now proceed without restriction. Travel times remain unchanged: SC 241 Pendolino Košičan departs Prague at 05:58 and arrives in Košice at 14:12. In the opposite direction, SC 240 Pendolino Košičan departs Košice at 14:48 and reaches Prague at 22:47. The new timetable from 14 December introduces only minor, minute-level adjustments.

The SuperCity Pendolino trains guarantee fast connections and high travel comfort. They stop only at main stations and consist of 1st and 2nd class carriages, with seat reservations compulsory. Transport of bicycles, prams, and luggage—including ski equipment—is straightforward. Passengers in wheelchairs will also find suitable spaces.

If passengers are hungry or thirsty, they can order from the onboard menu in the bistro or via the onboard service. The information portal allows ordering snacks directly to the seat throughout the journey and offers a wide range of books, music, games, and films in the media library. Young passengers can enjoy a children’s cinema and the game “Elfíkova cesta”.

The Pendolino trains are among the fastest in the Czech Republic, reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h, and hold the Czech speed record of 237 km/h.
