From July 2026, a new seasonal bus line will connect key excursion destinations in the Bohemian Karst and offer an alternative to individual car travel. Line 878 will operate on weekends and public holidays until the end of October.

From 1 July 2026, a new tourist bus line will begin operation in the Bohemian Karst. The seasonal line 878 will connect several highly frequented excursion destinations in the region and is also intended to provide an alternative to individual car travel.

The bus will run on weekends and public holidays until the end of October and is fully integrated into the Prague Integrated Transport (PID) system. The route runs through Karlštejn, Svatý Jan pod Skalou, Loděnice, Mořina and Hlásná Třebaň, among others. The aim is to make both well-known and less accessible locations easier to reach.

The project was implemented jointly by the Central Bohemian Region, the organisation Integrovaná doprava Středočeského kraje (IDSK) and the destination management organisation Berounsko. A key focus is also on relieving local infrastructure: visitors are encouraged to switch to public transport and avoid travelling by car.

According to Petr Borecký, responsible for public transport in the Central Bohemian Region, the Bohemian Karst is one of the most valuable natural areas in the region. With the new line, the aim is to promote more sustainable accessibility while at the same time reducing pressure on roads and parking areas.

Direct connection to rail transport

A central element of the concept is its connection to rail services. From Prague’s Smíchov station, Karlštejn can be reached via line S7 in around 33 minutes. From there, there is a connection to bus line 878, making destinations such as Svatý Jan pod Skalou or the Velká Amerika quarry reachable within about one hour.

IDSK director Zdeněk Šponar emphasised that particular attention was paid during planning to simple transfers and clear connections. Passengers can switch seamlessly between train and bus with a unified fare.

The line operates on a circular route between Karlštejn and the surrounding locations, with some services running clockwise and others in the opposite direction. Operations are planned on weekends and public holidays roughly between 8:30 and 18:00.

In the morning, departures are coordinated with trains arriving from Prague and run at 30-minute intervals. In the afternoon, the combined frequency is between 30 and 60 minutes.

Access to key excursion destinations

Numerous tourist attractions are served along the route, including the monastery in Svatý Jan pod Skalou with its viewpoint, the Chrustenická šachta mining museum, the Solvayovy lomy open-air site and the Velká Amerika quarry. A section of the Way of St James is also accessible from the line.

With the new connection, the Bohemian Karst is set to become more accessible to visitors—while placing a stronger emphasis on sustainable mobility in a sensitive natural landscape.
