Consumer sentiment in the Czech Republic deteriorated noticeably in April. In particular, concerns about economic development, rising prices and the geopolitical situation weighed on household confidence. Businesses, on the other hand, continued to assess the economic situation as comparatively stable.
According to the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ), the overall economic confidence indicator fell slightly by 0.8 points in April compared to the previous month, reaching 101.3 points. While business confidence remained at the level recorded in March, consumer confidence declined significantly.
The business confidence indicator remained unchanged at 100.4 points in April. However, differences were visible between individual sectors. Sentiment developed positively particularly in the services sector and in construction. In contrast, confidence declined in trade and industry.
According to the ČSÚ, weak demand continues to be a key issue for many companies. In some sectors, this is compounded by a shortage of qualified workers. At the same time, geopolitical uncertainties are increasingly having a negative impact on production costs.
Consumers were considerably more pessimistic in their assessment. The corresponding confidence indicator fell by 4.4 points in April to 106.0 points. Many households expect a deterioration in the overall economic situation in the Czech Republic over the next twelve months.
In addition, the proportion of consumers expecting an improvement in their own financial situation declined. At the same time, concerns about further price increases increased significantly. According to the statistical office, this is mainly linked to the current geopolitical situation.
The number of households intending to avoid major purchases over the next twelve months remained almost unchanged.
