International jazz meets a special setting in the heart of Prague: the Goethe-Institut invites to an evening with Kristina Barta and Martina Barta as well as US vibraphonist David Friedman. The focus is on improvisation, exchange and musical diversity.

On 20 May, the Goethe-Institut in Prague will once again become a stage for top-class jazz: from 18:30, the Czech musicians Kristina Barta and Martina Barta will perform together with US vibraphonist David Friedman. The concert is part of the “Kind of Goethe” series, which is organised in cooperation with the platform Prague Impro Room.

The event series combines musical quality with a special ambience: the starting point was a grand piano in the institute’s hall as well as the view of central landmarks such as Prague Castle and the National Theatre. From this, the idea of a jazz café emerged, placing encounter, improvisation and artistic exchange at its centre. The name “Kind of Goethe” is a reference to the legendary album Kind of Blue by Miles Davis from 1959.

For the current concert, curators Kristina and Martina Barta have secured one of the defining vibraphonists of modern jazz. David Friedman is internationally known for his stylistic versatility and has worked with Bobby McFerrin, Wayne Shorter, Chet Baker and Leonard Bernstein, among others. Alongside his stage career, he has influenced generations of musicians as an educator, including as head of the jazz department at the Berlin University of the Arts.

With the series, the Goethe-Institut aims to promote cultural exchange and creative openness. Jazz is particularly suited to this, as it combines improvisation, diversity and artistic freedom and can connect people across cultural boundaries.

Admission to the event is free, but prior registration is required.
