The season for picking your own strawberries in the Czech Republic is starting earlier this year. Some strawberry farms are already opening their fields in mid-May, while others will follow at the end of May or the beginning of June. Despite rising production costs, most producers expect only moderate price increases.
A great experience for both young and old is the so-called “samosběr” – a service offered by many Czech farmers that allows customers to pick their own strawberries. Compared to buying strawberries in supermarkets, these berries are almost half the price. The service is becoming increasingly popular and offers not only economic advantages. For nature lovers, picking strawberries is both an enjoyable and memorable experience.
The Ministry of Agriculture provides a special website with an overview of farms offering the service. Visitors can select their region and receive a list of available farms. Clicking on the name of a farm provides all important information – from prices and addresses to opening hours and further details.
“Samosběr” combines freshness, affordability and a nature experience – an offer that more and more people are taking advantage of. So grab a basket, head out to the fields and enjoy picking fresh local strawberries yourself.
However, producers warn that this year’s season could be shorter. In addition, many farms expect smaller strawberries due to drought and frosts during the flowering period.
According to a report by ČT24, the region around Český Brod has been particularly heavily affected, with damage estimated at 50 to 60 per cent of the harvest. Significant losses were also caused by spring frosts at the well-known strawberry farm in Vraňany. However, part of the plants there could be saved using special protective foil.
