The Holešovická tržnice will once again become a centre of Ukrainian culture and community in Prague on Thursday. The event combines traditional Ukrainian culture with solidarity and support for refugees in the Czech Republic.

The Holešovická tržnice will once again become a meeting place for Ukrainian culture in Prague on Thursday, 21 May 2026. The fifth Vyshyvanka Day will offer visitors a full-day programme from 11 am to 10 pm, featuring gastronomy, music, folklore, workshops and a handicrafts market. Admission is voluntary, with proceeds going to Organizace pro pomoc uprchlíkům (OPU).

International Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated every year on the third Thursday in May and commemorates the tradition of Ukrainian embroidered shirts, known as vyshyvankas. The elaborately decorated garments are considered one of the most important symbols of Ukrainian culture and identity.

The Prague event combines this tradition with a modern, community-oriented approach. The aim is to create a space for encounters between Ukrainians in the Czech Republic, Czech supporters of Ukraine and the wider public.

“The event was created five years ago as a direct response to the Russian attack on Ukraine and was primarily intended to offer an opportunity for exchange and a brief respite from the reality of war,” said Michal Tošovský, Programme Director of the Holešovická tržnice. At the same time, he emphasised the long-standing Czech-Ukrainian relations and the importance of Prague as an open and cosmopolitan city.

A central part of the festival is once again the gastronomy zone, organised together with the Archetyp association. Visitors can look forward to Ukrainian and Central European specialities as well as selected street food stalls.

Musically, the event is also expanding its programme this year. Planned performances include children’s choirs, street musicians, traditional and modern music groups, and, for the first time, Ukrainian folk dances. One of the main acts will be the Ukrainian singer Gapochka.

The popular handicrafts market will move indoors to Hall 24 for the first time this year. Artists will present traditional and modern products featuring Ukrainian motifs. The programme will also include creative workshops and demonstrations.

In addition, several Ukrainian organisations and initiatives will present their work. Participants include the Ukrainian scouts of PLAST Prague, the organisation Generation Ukraine, the aid organisation Locika, as well as Ukrainian student associations and a Ukrainian school in Prague.

The event will take place at Tržní náměstí in the Holešovická tržnice. Admission is voluntary, with proceeds going to OPU to support refugees.
