The Prague Botanical Garden will once again host its popular Bonsai and Japanese Culture Festival in June. Visitors can look forward to a large exhibition of exceptional bonsais, including outstanding international exhibits, as well as an extensive accompanying programme featuring workshops, demonstrations and traditional Japanese art forms.
After three years, the Bonsai Festival is returning and will once again transform the Prague Botanical Garden (Botanická zahrada Praha) into a place dedicated to Japan. At the centre of the event is an extensive bonsai exhibition in the Japanese Garden, complemented by cultural performances, guided tours and two festival weekends featuring Japanese-themed programmes.
From 5 to 14 June, more than 100 bonsais from the collections of the Prague Botanical Garden, as well as from leading bonsai growers from the Czech Republic and abroad, will be displayed in the Japanese Garden. Visitors will also be able to take part in the “Miss Bonsai” public vote or join guided tours of the exhibition.

One of the highlights of this year’s festival is the international Bonsai Triennial, taking place from 5 to 7 June in the Ornamental Gardens exhibition hall. The renowned exhibition is held in the Czech Republic only once every three years and rotates between the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. Only 15 growers from each country are permitted to take part, with each participant allowed to present just one tree. As a result, Prague is expected to showcase some particularly exceptional exhibits from the European bonsai scene.

From 12 to 14 June, the second part of the exhibition will focus on traditional accompanying arts connected with bonsais. Among the featured displays will be Suiseki — naturally shaped stones that can resemble landscapes or animals — as well as Kusamono, decorative arrangements made from grasses and plants. Traditional bonsai pots, considered an important part of the presentation of Japanese miniature trees, will also be on display.
During the weekends of 6–7 June and 13–14 June, an additional Japanese culture festival will take place in the Ornamental Gardens. The programme is set to include traditional tea ceremonies, bonsai demonstrations, martial arts performances, calligraphy, ikebana, workshops, lectures, as well as themed food and market stalls.
