With the construction of the new Olšanská–Habrová tram line, Prague is continuing to expand its public transport network. The almost two-kilometre-long route is set to provide better tram connections in future for new residential areas around the former Žižkov freight station site.
Construction of the new Olšanská–Habrová tram line in Prague is moving closer. Prague Public Transit Company DPP has awarded the contract for the infrastructure project to a consortium of three Czech construction companies. In future, the new route is expected to improve public transport connections to the emerging district around the former Žižkov freight station site (Nákladové nádraží Žižkov), among other areas.
As Dopravní podnik hl. m. Prahy (DPP) announced, the new tram line will be built by the companies FIRESTA, rekonstrukce, stavby, PEDASTA, dopravní stavby and N+N – Konstrukce a dopravní stavby Litoměřice. The contract has already been signed.

The consortium won the public tender with a bid of around CZK 600 million. This was almost CZK 110 million below the originally estimated contract value.
According to DPP, construction work is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year. A total of twelve months has been allocated for completion of the project. The new tram line will also be co-financed by the European Union under the “Doprava 2021–2027” programme.

The almost two-kilometre-long route is set to run largely along the disused Praha-Žižkov – Praha-Malešice railway corridor. A new residential district with housing and infrastructure is currently being developed in the area of the former Žižkov freight station and is expected to be directly connected to the tram network in future.
The new section of line will begin at a new junction at the Jana Želivského / Olšanská intersection and will end near Osiková Street in the Jarov district.

Around two-thirds of the route will be built as a double-track line. In the final section, the tram will run on an adapted existing railway alignment. A new substation will also be built in Na Viktorce Street to supply electricity to the line.
As part of the project, the final names of the new stops have also been confirmed. The stops along the route will be Nákladové nádraží Žižkov, Bernasova, Třebešín, Vackov, Habrová and Jarov.
The new stops in particular are expected to significantly improve transport connections for existing residential areas as well as the new development around the former freight station site. Several areas currently served only by bus routes will in future receive a direct tram connection.
