More extensive additional work is required during the modernisation of Flora Metro Station than initially expected. As a result, the planned reopening will be delayed by around three months.

Flora Metro Station will remain closed longer than originally planned. Considerable damage to load-bearing concrete and steel structures was discovered during the construction work. Passengers are therefore not expected to be able to use the station again until the end of February 2027.

Despite the unexpected problems, the modernisation of the station continues to make progress. Construction workers have created the first breakthrough to the existing station from a future lift shaft. Excavation work is continuing in the second shaft, where an evacuation staircase will later be built. The second breakthrough to the station is planned for the first half of September. The final tunnel lining and internal concrete structures will then be constructed. According to the Prague Public Transit Company DPP, the new lifts are scheduled to enter service in the first quarter of 2028.

Damage to Ceiling Structure Discovered

Most of the construction work is currently focused on the platform level. After removing the stone cladding, workers discovered considerably more extensive damage than originally expected. Both reinforced concrete and steel beams in the ceiling structure are affected. In several places, the fire-protection layer is also severely damaged or completely absent. According to the transport company, the damage was caused by aggressive seepage water.

The Prague Public Transit Company commissioned the Klokner Institute at the Czech Technical University to examine the damage. The assessment confirmed extensive damage to the load-bearing structures and the inadequate condition of the fire-protection layers.

“The only solution is to repair the damaged and inadequate elements of the load-bearing ceiling structure and replace them with new ones where necessary,” explained DPP Transport Director Jan Barchánek. He added that the fire protection must also be completely renewed to ensure the station’s safety and long-term operational viability.

The additional work will extend the construction period by around three months. Flora Metro Station will therefore remain closed to passengers until the end of February 2027.

New Escalators Already Installed

At the same time, the final inclined section of the third new escalator was installed this week. The installation of the equipment in the machine room, gradual commissioning and technical approval will follow in the coming months.

According to the transport company, the waterproofing work has already been completed. The protective stainless-steel cladding is currently being reinstalled. The ventilation system and other technical equipment are also being completely replaced.

Construction work on the commercial premises and public toilets is under way in the entrance hall. The transformer station is also being renewed in an area that is not accessible to the public while operations continue.

Modernisation of Hradčanská Station Not Affected

According to the transport company, the longer closure of Flora Station will have no impact on the planned modernisation of Hradčanská Metro Station. Preparatory work there is initially scheduled to begin in autumn 2026 while the station remains in operation. Hradčanská Station will also be closed to passengers from the beginning of January 2027.
