A new central emergency department is being built at Prague’s Thomayer University Hospital. The modern hospital pavilion is set to improve emergency medical care for around 600,000 people.

A new central emergency department is being built at Prague’s Thomayer University Hospital. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Health Minister Adam Vojtěch officially laid the foundation stone for the new hospital pavilion on Wednesday.

The project is one of the largest investments in the hospital’s further development and is expected to fundamentally transform the organisation of emergency medical care. One of its main aims is to significantly reduce the time between a patient’s arrival and the start of diagnosis and treatment.

The spatial layout of the new building is intended to eliminate unnecessary transport routes within the hospital and ensure a smooth transition between individual examinations and treatments.

Operating Theatres, Intensive Care Units and Modern Diagnostics

The new pavilion will include observation units, trauma outpatient clinics and areas for diagnostic imaging. These will be equipped with modern CT and MRI scanners.

“A state-of-the-art facility is being created that will bring key areas of emergency care together in one place and enable patients to be treated more quickly and efficiently,” Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said at the launch of construction work.

Plans also include a modern surgical complex with three operating theatres, intensive care units and departments for acute inpatient care. Emergency medical services, which are currently spread across several areas, will therefore largely be brought together at a single location.

According to the government, almost 600,000 people from Prague 4, the surrounding districts and neighbouring areas of the Central Bohemian Region are expected to benefit from the new emergency department.

Completion Planned for March 2029

The total cost of the project amounts to approximately CZK 2.2 billion. The Czech Ministry of Health will provide just under CZK 1.11 billion, while a further CZK 620 million will come from the European Union’s Integrated Regional Operational Programme (IROP). The hospital itself will contribute approximately CZK 475.7 million.
