A year-round ban on fireworks in category F2 and above has been in force in 20 Prague districts since 8 July. The capital aims to protect people and animals and curb public-order offences.
Prague has significantly tightened the rules governing the use of fireworks. Since 8 July 2026, a year-round ban without exceptions has applied to pyrotechnic products in category F2 and above in 20 districts. The measure is intended to protect people and animals and improve public order.
The new regulation is based on an amendment to the Czech Pyrotechnics Act that came into force last December. This allows municipalities to restrict the use of fireworks more extensively than before. Prague City Council adopted the corresponding ordinance on 19 June 2026.

At the request of the respective districts, the year-round ban applies in Prague 1, Prague 2, Prague 3, Prague 5, Prague 6, Prague 7, Prague 8, Prague 9, Prague 10, Prague 11, Prague 13, Prague 15 and Prague 20, as well as Dolní Chabry, Dolní Měcholupy, Křeslice, Libuš, Suchdol, Troja and Velká Chuchle.
In the remaining districts, the ordinance specifies when and where freely available fireworks may be set off.
Protecting People and Animals
According to the city, the stricter regulation takes into account new scientific findings on the negative impact of fireworks on the surrounding environment. In particular, the ban is intended to reduce the stress caused by loud explosions for some people, as well as pets and wild animals.
“It is no secret that I am personally not a fan of fireworks. However, the new regulation does not impose anything on anyone, but instead strengthens the democratic ability of individual districts to decide for themselves how they want to deal with the issue,” said Adam Zábranský, Prague City Councillor responsible for property, transparency and legislation.
Some districts had been calling for a complete ban on fireworks within their territory for some time. With the new ordinance, the capital has now responded to their request.

Ban Also Applies Around Football Stadiums
The regulation is also intended to curb public-order offences connected with sporting events. In the past, fireworks were repeatedly set off, particularly during football matches and activities involving groups of supporters.
Since 1 February 2022, fines of up to CZK 50,000 have been possible for using fireworks at organised sporting events or while travelling to or from them. Repeat offences can result in fines of up to CZK 100,000. In practice, however, it is often difficult to prove that a person was travelling to or from a sporting event.
The new Prague ordinance therefore does not distinguish between the particular circumstances. In the affected districts, the use of the relevant fireworks remains prohibited throughout the year, regardless of football matches or other events.
This also applies to Prague 3, Prague 6, Prague 7 and Prague 10, where the capital’s largest football stadiums are located. Fireworks have repeatedly been set off in their vicinity during matches in the past.
Anyone who violates the new ordinance faces a fine of up to CZK 100,000 under the Pyrotechnics Act.
