After years of recurring problems with water ingress, the ceiling above the concourse at Prague Main Railway Station will undergo a comprehensive renovation. The works are due to be completed by 2028 and will be carried out while the station remains fully operational.
A major refurbishment of the ceiling above the concourse at Prague Main Railway Station will begin in July. The aim of the project is to eliminate long-standing problems caused by water ingress and to ensure the long-term preservation of the building’s structure. The works are expected to continue until 2028.
The contract has been awarded to a consortium comprising the companies Subterra and FIRESTA-Fišer, rekonstrukce, stavby. The total value of the contract amounts to approximately CZK 290 million. As part of the project, both the waterproofing of the ceiling and the drainage system of the urban highway running directly above it will be renewed.

Price was not the only factor considered during the tender process. The Czech railway infrastructure manager, Správa železnic, also assessed the impact of the works on traffic in front of the station. The selected construction plan envisages restrictions for a total of 126 calendar days, around 40 days fewer than originally anticipated. During this period, two lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction. For the following ten months, the works are not expected to affect road traffic.
With this project, the railway administration is responding to recurring water damage affecting the concourse, which dates back to the 1970s. In addition to the renovation of the reinforced concrete structure, adjacent road surfaces and pavements will also be modernised.
The relocation of public lighting is also planned. The area in front of the historic Fanta Building will be enhanced with newly planted trees. At the same time, access to the station from the side of the National Museum will be improved.
During the construction works, the stops for the Airport Express service and long-distance coach services will be temporarily relocated to Opletalova Street. The car park above the concourse will remain closed throughout the entire construction period.
The project is being financed in part through a loan from the European Investment Bank under the “Czech Rail TEN-T and Regional” programme. The national co-financing will be provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
