The number of recorded crimes in the Czech Republic fell slightly in 2025. At the same time, the authorities recorded a significant increase in sexual offences, while the number of convictions also rose.

According to police data, a total of 170,051 crimes were recorded in the Czech Republic in 2025. This represents a decrease of 3,271 cases, or 1.9 per cent, compared with the previous year. A total of 76,803 offences were solved, resulting in a detection rate of 45.2 per cent, almost unchanged from 2024.

Crime declined in seven of the country's 14 regions. The most significant decreases were recorded in Prague and the Ústí nad Labem Region.

Among the most frequently investigated offences were fraud cases, breaches of official orders – such as driving while disqualified – and shoplifting. Economic crime fell by 4.1 per cent. Other forms of crime declined even more sharply, down 11 per cent. This was mainly due to a significant reduction in cases involving unpaid child maintenance.

Sexual offenses are increasing, violent crime remains stable.

The sharpest increase was recorded in sexual offences. The number of such crimes rose by 8.8 per cent year-on-year to around 3,700 cases. The trend in rape cases remains particularly notable. For the second consecutive year, more than 1,000 cases were reported. In 2025, police recorded 1,086 rapes, 19 more than in the previous year.

Violent crime, by contrast, remained largely stable. A total of 13,752 violent offences were recorded, including 156 homicides.

During the past year, police investigated 74,898 individuals and 311 legal entities. The number of accused persons fell slightly compared with 2024, decreasing by 580. The proportion of women among accused persons remained almost unchanged at around 17 per cent.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the number of people convicted with final legal effect increased by 3.3 per cent to 47,980. The prison population, however, remained almost unchanged. As of 31 December 2025, a total of 19,359 people were being held in Czech prisons. Of these, 1,651 were in pre-trial detention, 17,590 were serving prison sentences, and 118 were being held in preventive detention.

In a European comparison, the Czech Republic continues to rank among the countries with a high imprisonment rate. According to the latest available data from Eurostat for 2024, the country ranked fourth in the European Union, with 178 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants. Only Hungary, Poland and Latvia recorded higher figures.

The latest figures come from the newly published report “Crime – Data for 2025” (CZ) by the Czech Statistical Office, which brings together police statistics, judicial data, prison service information and international comparisons.
