The current heatwave has Czechia firmly in its grip. A new record temperature was measured in Doksany on Saturday. From Monday, meteorologists expect a noticeable drop in temperatures and a gradual easing of the weather situation.

The persistent heatwave brought new temperature highs across Czechia on Saturday. Daytime temperatures ranged between 34 and 39 degrees Celsius across most of the country. In some places, temperatures even exceeded 40°C.

The highest temperature was recorded at the weather station in Doksany (Ústí nad Labem Region) with 40.8°C. Should this reading be confirmed following verification, it would surpass the previous Czech national temperature record of 40.4°C, set in Dobřichovice on 20 August 2012.

According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), daily temperature records for 27 June were matched or broken at 156 of the 171 weather stations with at least 30 years of observations. That corresponds to around 91 per cent of all stations.

At around 71 per cent of the stations, the previous temperature record for the entire month of June was also matched or exceeded. At 20 weather stations, it was even the hottest day since records began.

New heat record could be broken again today

Final confirmation of a new national record is still pending, as the measurements must first be verified. However, any new record may not stand for long, as meteorologists are forecasting even higher temperatures for today, Sunday.

In individual cases, the final maximum temperatures may still change slightly. This applies in particular to the weather station at Prague's Klementinum, where the highest temperatures are often reached later than at other stations due to the urban heat island effect.

The extreme heat is already having a noticeable impact. Emergency services are reporting an increased number of call-outs as more and more people are suffering from the high temperatures. Many are therefore seeking relief at lakes, rivers and outdoor swimming pools. Given the summer heat, people are advised to drink plenty of fluids, avoid direct sunlight whenever possible, and take particular care of older people, children and other vulnerable groups.
