Partial Solar Eclipse Visible over the Czech Republic on Wednesday
Particularly good conditions are expected in the west and south of the country – in the east, the peak will in some places occur after sunset

A partial solar eclipse will be visible over the Czech Republic on Wednesday. The best conditions are expected in the west and south of the country, while in the east the peak of the eclipse will in some places no longer be visible.
A partial solar eclipse will be visible over the Czech Republic on Wednesday, 12 August. How much of the astronomical event can be seen will, however, depend heavily on the location. Those interested can also watch the eclipse at several observatories and planetariums offering accompanying programmes.
The biggest astronomical event visible from the Czech Republic this year will begin at around 7.19 pm. The further east observers are located, the later the eclipse will begin and the less of it they will be able to see.
The eclipse will reach its maximum at 8.11 pm, but this will not be visible everywhere. In the east of the Czech Republic and in Slovakia, the Sun will already be below the horizon at that time. The event will end at around 8.30 pm.
Best Viewed from Elevated Locations
The best conditions are expected in western and southern Bohemia. In Cheb, Pilsen and České Budějovice, observers will be able to see around 87 per cent of the Sun obscured.
In Prague, Brno, Pardubice and Opava, viewing the Sun as it is already setting will be more difficult. Nevertheless, around 86 per cent of the solar disc could still be covered by the Moon. In Ostrava, however, the peak of the eclipse will no longer be visible, as the Sun will already have disappeared below the horizon by that time.
During a partial solar eclipse, the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, obscuring part of the solar disc. Unlike during a total solar eclipse, however, the Sun is never completely covered by the Moon.
