Prague Continues to Invest in Modernising Street Lighting for E-Mobility
Selected street lights are to be prepared for the installation of charging stations – work will be coordinated with the renewal of the electricity grid

Prague is continuing to expand its charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Selected street lights will be technically prepared for this purpose, while work on the electricity grid will be coordinated.
Prague City Council has approved the continuation of a project to modernise public lighting and expand the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Three key contracts will be extended until the end of 2028.
“We are continuing to modernise public lighting and link it with the development of e-mobility. We are extending the project until 2028 so that we can continue preparing selected street lights for the installation of charging stations,” said Prague Deputy Mayor for Infrastructure Michal Hroza.
The project focuses on the so-called synergy between the modernisation of public lighting and the renewal of the electricity distribution grid. Through joint planning and the use of the same cable routes, disruption to roads and pavements is to be kept to a minimum. At the same time, the city aims to minimise inconvenience for residents and visitors.
In addition, selected street lights are to be equipped with a sufficient power supply. These so-called “EV-ready” street lights can later be used for the installation of charging stations for electric vehicles.
The project was originally scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026. However, the first jointly implemented schemes took longer than expected. As a result, the overall project has not yet been completed, and the funds allocated for it have not yet been fully utilised.
According to the city, all parties involved are interested in continuing and successfully completing the project. The City Council therefore approved amendments to three existing contracts.
These include the framework agreement on cooperation in the modernisation of public lighting between the City of Prague and electricity distribution network operator PREdistribuce, as well as the framework agreement on representation in central public procurement procedures and other activities between the city and the municipal company Technologie hlavního města Prahy.
The contract for the renewal of public lighting as part of the e-mobility project between the City of Prague and Technologie hlavního města Prahy will also be extended. All three contracts will now remain valid until 31 December 2028.
