Temperatures in the Czech Republic to Rise to 36°C This Weekend

Following a brief spell of cooler weather, the heat is returning to the Czech Republic. Temperatures of up to 36°C are expected this weekend before it becomes significantly cooler again at the beginning of the new week.

According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), the weather in the Czech Republic will be predominantly sunny and hot over the weekend. However, cloud cover will gradually increase, particularly in Bohemia, on Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected in some areas.

Last week, temperatures in parts of the country had already exceeded the 40°C mark. Until the end of the week, daytime highs were frequently above the tropical threshold of 30°C. Temperatures of around 36°C were still recorded in some areas on Monday.

From Friday, temperatures will once again rise above the 30°C mark. Highs will generally range between 27°C and 32°C. Only the north-east will remain slightly cooler, with maximum temperatures of around 26°C.

Temperatures of between 31°C and 36°C are expected nationwide on Saturday. Highs on Sunday will also range between 32°C and 36°C, while temperatures in the west of the country are not expected to exceed 29°C.

For Saturday and Sunday, the ČHMÚ initially forecasts clear to partly cloudy skies. Cloud cover will increase during Sunday, particularly in Bohemia, with showers and thunderstorms possible in some areas.

Another spell of cooler weather will follow at the beginning of next week. On Monday, temperatures will generally reach only 20°C to 25°C. Highs of up to 28°C are possible in some eastern and north-eastern areas. In the following days, maximum temperatures of between 21°C and 26°C are expected, along with unsettled weather featuring showers and thunderstorms.

Nationwide Warning of Increased Fire Risk

Due to the persistent dry conditions and high temperatures, there is currently an increased risk of fires starting and spreading across the Czech Republic. According to the ČHMÚ, the risk is likely to increase further over the weekend due to strengthening winds. Meteorologists have been warning for some time of possible fires resulting from the dry weather. Until now, however, the warning had not applied to all districts, including parts of north-eastern Bohemia. The nationwide warning will now remain in force until further notice.
