Prague Orders More Škoda 52T Trams

Prague is continuing to expand its modern tram fleet. Against the backdrop of the growing tram network, the city is allocating more than CZK 1.2 billion for the purchase of additional Škoda 52T trams.

Prague City Council has approved a new investment project to expand the tram fleet of the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP). At the same time, it approved around CZK 1.2 billion from the city budget. The funds are intended to cover the remaining share of the financing for 29 new trams.

According to the current schedule, the vehicles are to be delivered and put into service between September 2026 and February 2027. The European Union is supporting the purchase through the Modernisation Fund with CZK 40 million per vehicle.

The base price of a Škoda 52T tram is CZK 82.5 million. After deducting the EU funding, the city’s share of the financing amounts to CZK 42.5 million per vehicle.

According to Deputy Mayor for Transport Jaromír Beránek, Prague is currently experiencing the largest expansion of its tram network in decades. Numerous kilometres of new lines are either being planned or are already under construction. At the same time, the city must modernise and expand its fleet.

The Prague Public Transit Company has now also confirmed the fourth optional order for a further 25 vehicles. Their financing is to be included in Prague’s 2027 budget. All trams already ordered are to be delivered over the course of next year. This means that a total of 96 Škoda 52T trams are expected to be available in Prague by the beginning of 2028.

A total of 51 vehicles are currently in production or being delivered. The Škoda 52T is already in regular service in Prague and, according to the city, has proven highly successful in daily operation.
