Prague’s Ďáblice Observatory Celebrates 70th Anniversary with Space Festival This Weekend

This weekend, Prague’s Ďáblice Observatory will be transformed into a celebration of space. To mark its 70th anniversary, visitors can enjoy a free festival featuring light installations, interactive activities and an open-air spectacle.

Prague’s Ďáblice Observatory is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a three-day family festival. Under the title “Mezi planetami jako doma” (At home among the planets) , visitors can look forward to a varied programme centred on science, space, theatre and movement.

The festival will take place this weekend, from Friday, 11 September, to Sunday, 13 September 2026, in the park next to Ďáblice Observatory. Admission is free throughout the weekend.

A special space installation featuring illuminated models of planets and other celestial bodies in the Solar System will be created in the park. The programme is aimed at visitors of all ages – from children and families to astronomy enthusiasts and those interested in culture.

The official opening is scheduled for Friday at 4 pm. It will be followed by activities including the adventurous “Mission to the Moon”, a scientific space laboratory, astronomical observations and other interactive experiences. In the evening, the models of the planets and other celestial bodies will be illuminated.

Saturday’s highlight will be the theatrical performance “Mezi světy” by the V.O.S.A. Theatre ensemble. The performance begins at 8 pm and combines contemporary circus, oversized puppets, acrobatics, dance and fire elements in an open-air spectacle.

Throughout the weekend, there will also be activities for children, scientific experiments and further opportunities to explore space. Weather permitting, visitors will be able to observe the Sun, planets and stars through astronomical telescopes.

The festival also highlights the importance of Ďáblice Observatory, which has been bringing astronomical knowledge and space exploration closer to the public for seven decades. The event aims to demonstrate that science can be entertaining, adventurous and accessible to a broad audience.
