The Škoda Superb is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Since the unveiling of the first modern model generation in September 2001, the vehicle has developed into an important part of the Czech car manufacturer’s international growth.

Škoda Auto is marking 25 years since the launch of the modern Superb. The model was presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show on 11 September 2001 and has since become known primarily for its high level of driving comfort, generous interior space and modern technology. The car manufacturer has now delivered around 1.8 million vehicles worldwide across four model generations. The current generation is available with petrol and diesel engines, as well as mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Return of a Historic Name

The history of the Superb model name dates back to 1934. At that time, the revised Škoda 640 was given the name Superb. The vehicle was produced in various body styles until 1949 and was one of the manufacturer’s most technologically advanced models of its time.

More than five decades later, Škoda revived the historic name. The first generation of the modern Superb, unveiled in 2001, also marked the brand’s return to the mid-size segment. The model was distinguished in particular by its generous rear-seat space and a wide range of engines and equipment options.

Four Generations of Technological Development

The first generation laid the foundations for the qualities that continue to define the Superb today: comfort, spaciousness, everyday practicality and an understated, elegant design.

With the second generation, Škoda introduced the TwinDoor system for the liftback in 2008. This made it possible to open either only the boot lid or the entire tailgate, depending on requirements. An estate version was later added to the range. All-wheel-drive variants also proved highly popular.

The third generation, unveiled in 2015, brought a significant technological leap forward. New features included modern connectivity functions, numerous assistance systems and a more distinctive design. In 2019, the Superb also became Škoda’s first production model with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The fourth generation was launched in 2023. It offers a further-developed interior concept featuring the so-called Škoda Smart Dials, as well as a broad selection of petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Comfort, safety and digital equipment have also been further enhanced.

Around 1.8 Million Vehicles Delivered Worldwide

Since the introduction of the modern Superb in 2001, Škoda has delivered around 1.8 million vehicles of this model to customers worldwide. The Superb has therefore played a significant role in strengthening the brand in European and non-European markets.

In addition to private customers, the model is frequently used by companies and fleet operators. Public institutions, governments and police authorities in various countries also use the Superb as an official vehicle.
