Prague’s Industrial Palace Reopens Its Doors After 18 Years

Following the devastating fire in 2008 and four and a half years of reconstruction, the full reopening of Prague’s Industrial Palace is just around the corner. An extensive accompanying programme offers insights into the history, architecture and elaborate restoration of the listed building.

After 18 years, the Industrial Palace is returning to the Prague Exhibition Grounds, Výstaviště Praha, in its original form. Exhibitions, guided tours and art projects are planned to mark the reopening. Visitors will also gain access to areas that are not normally open to the public.

In future, the Industrial Palace is intended not only to serve as a historic monument, but once again as a vibrant venue for culture, design and social life. One of the highlights of the accompanying programme is the art project ‘Jak se dotknout nebe’ – ‘How to Touch the Sky’ – by Barbora Šlapetová and Lukáš Rittstein.

Guided Tours of the Reconstructed Palace

Prague City Tourism is offering one-hour guided tours of the building. Participants will learn more about the Industrial Palace’s history spanning more than 130 years, its architecture, important events, as well as the current restoration and reconstruction.

The tours focus on how modern 21st-century technology was integrated into the historic building without compromising its original character. They are held in Czech and begin in front of the main entrance to the central hall. A maximum of 30 people can take part in each tour.

The symbolic admission price of 91 crowns refers to the year the building opened, 1891. The first series of tours is already sold out. Due to high demand, additional dates will be offered on 29 and 30 September and 1 and 2 October 2026. Tickets go on sale on Tuesday, 15 September.

Designblok Returns to the Industrial Palace

Another opportunity to visit the building will be provided by the 28th edition of the international design and fashion festival Designblok, which takes place from 7 to 11 October 2026. Alongside the Trade Fair Palace of the National Gallery Prague, several venues at Prague Castle and the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Industrial Palace is one of this year’s festival venues.

Under the theme ‘Light’, Designblok will present exhibitions, installations, works by designers and brands, as well as fashion shows. Admission to the Industrial Palace is included in the regular festival ticket.

Exhibition Presents the Crafts Involved

From 24 September, the open-air exhibition ‘Obnova v rukou mistrů’ – ‘Restoration in the Hands of Masters’ – in front of the Industrial Palace will showcase the specialised crafts involved in the reconstruction.

Among other things, the exhibition explains the restoration of historic glass windows, metal ornamentation and decorative elements. It also shows how the historic steel structure was treated and how missing sections of the façade were reconstructed using preserved originals.

Further topics include the clock tower, heraldic elements, historic dates and symbols, as well as key figures and facts about the entire construction project. The exhibition was conceived by publicist Libor Hruška.

The open-air exhibition can be seen in front of the Industrial Palace from 24 September. Admission is free.
