Revitalisation of Prague’s Kampa Park Can Start

After decades of planning, the comprehensive renewal of Kampa Park is now imminent. The work is to be carried out while the park remains open and with as few restrictions as possible.

After around 30 years of preparations and discussions, the revitalisation of Prague’s Kampa Park can begin. The competent competition authority has confirmed the tender procedure conducted by the Prague 1 district.

The contract has been awarded to the “Park KAMPA” consortium, which submitted a bid of CZK 51,899,816 for the work. The offer is therefore around CZK 16.7 million below the originally estimated budget and the financial framework approved by the district assembly.

KRAJINNÁ ZELEŇ filed a complaint against the tender procedure, although the company had not submitted a bid itself. It lodged its objections to the tender conditions just ten minutes before the deadline for submitting bids. The Czech Office for the Protection of Competition (ÚOHS) initially rejected the application at first instance and subsequently also dismissed the appeal against that decision. The decision has now become final, allowing Prague 1 to conclude the contract with the selected contractor and begin implementing the project.

“The review delayed the project by several months, but this chapter is now closed. The important thing is that Prague 1’s approach has been confirmed and we can now focus on the actual revitalisation of the park,” said Deputy District Mayor Kateřina Klasnová, who is responsible for the environment.

The precise timetable will now be agreed with the contractor and subsequently published. As Kampa Park attracts large numbers of visitors throughout the year, the work is to be planned in a way that causes as little disruption as possible to residents, visitors, businesses and local associations.

The district has already received CZK 8 million from the City of Prague for the revitalisation. A further approximately CZK 6 million will be allocated to new streetlights and their installation, which is to be carried out by the municipal company Technologie hlavního města Prahy. Prague 1 also expects to receive around CZK 8 million in European funding for green infrastructure.

Basic Structure of the Park to Be Preserved

The revitalisation is intended to preserve the fundamental character and current layout of Kampa Park. The plans include renewing the paths along their existing routes, maintaining the green spaces and planting new trees and shrubs.

In addition, the park furniture is to be renewed, new “Prague Lantern” lights installed and a new fence built along the Čertovka Canal. Drinking fountains and misting jets, a pétanque area and improvements to the children’s playground, including a shade-providing pergola, are also planned. The roof of the public toilets is also to be planted with greenery.

Experts, heritage protection authorities and the public were involved in developing the project. Almost 600 people took part in the public participation process, which included surveys, the collection of suggestions, guided walks and public discussions. Their suggestions were incorporated into the final design by architect Magdalena Kurfürstová of Studio TAK.

Kampa Park will not be completely closed during the work. Prague 1 intends to inform the public in good time about temporary restrictions during the individual construction phases.
