Boršice Is the Czech Republic’s ‘Village of the Year 2026’

Boršice in the south-east of the Czech Republic has been named ‘Village of the Year 2026’. The municipality prevailed in the anniversary edition of the nationwide competition with a comprehensive development concept and vibrant community life.

The municipality of Boršice in the Uherské Hradiště District has won the nationwide ‘Vesnice roku’ competition. This year, the top award in the 30th edition of the competition therefore goes to a municipality in the Zlín Region.

Boršice lies at the foot of the Chřiby Hills and has a population of 2,186. The first written record of the village dates back to 1220. Winegrowing is closely linked to the municipality’s history, with the tradition dating back to at least the 14th century. Two winegrowers’ knives, grapes and a vine leaf on the municipal coat of arms still serve as a reminder of this today.

The nationwide judging panel particularly praised the municipality’s convincing presentation across all competition categories. Boršice provides good conditions for children, families and older people while also investing in public spaces, infrastructure and the further development of the village.

The jury highlighted the comprehensively renovated primary school and nursery grounds as a successful example. A new childcare group has also been established there. The site is directly adjacent to a cultural and sports centre and is to be complemented in future by a renovated branch of the local art school.

Cooperation with agricultural businesses in the surrounding area was also assessed positively. The school kitchen gives preference to products from local suppliers. The children can put together their own meals in buffet style, helping them learn to handle food independently and responsibly.

The care provided for older people and residents with health-related limitations was also recognised. According to the jury, this reflects the strong sense of cohesion within the community.

Regional customs and Moravian folklore continue to play an important role in community life. Every year, Boršice holds a traditional church festival featuring folk costumes, brass music and historic customs. The Boršičanka brass band and the Pentla folklore ensemble also contribute to cultural life.

By awarding the title ‘Village of the Year 2026’, the jury recognised not only the municipality’s completed projects, but above all the commitment of its residents, local cooperation and the conscious preservation of regional traditions.
