Numerous protests in Prague are accompanying today’s strike at ČT and ČRo. A recent poll shows that a clear majority of Czechs support the independence of public service media.

The planned abolition of radio and television licence fees is prompting debate about the future of public service media in the Czech Republic. Employees of Czech Television (ČT) and Czech Radio (ČRo) have been on a 24-hour strike since midnight today. They fear that abolishing the existing licence fee system could jeopardise the independence of both broadcasters.

A snap poll conducted by STEM/MARK on behalf of ČT shows that 68 per cent of the population believe public service media should remain independent of the state and private owners. At the same time, 54 per cent of adult Czechs currently prefer funding through the state budget. Of those surveyed, 23 per cent favour implementing the proposal as quickly as possible under the current version of the bill. A further 31 per cent support the change on the condition that stable funding and the independence of ČT and ČRo are guaranteed at the same time.

Retaining licence fees is supported by 34 per cent. A further 12 per cent have no clear opinion on the matter.

Criticism of the Government’s Communication

Almost half of respondents believe that the governing coalition is not adequately explaining the planned changes and their impact on public service media and the state budget. Only 16 per cent fully agree with the statement that the government is explaining these issues.

The public is almost evenly divided between supporters and opponents of activities and protests in support of ČT and ČRo. Support is particularly high among opposition voters, at 88 per cent. In Prague, too, support clearly predominates, at 69 per cent. It stands at 67 per cent among students, 64 per cent among university graduates and 60 per cent among young people.

Opposition is strongest among voters of the governing parties: 72 per cent oppose the activities. Among people aged over 60, the figure is 60 per cent. Among those who take little interest in current developments surrounding ČT and ČRo, it stands at 55 per cent.

Protests in Support of ČT and ČRo in Prague

Several protest marches in Prague are accompanying today’s strike. Drivers should expect significant disruption in the afternoon, particularly on the approach to the city centre from the D1 motorway. A rally in support of both broadcasters begins at 4.36pm in Prague’s Wenceslas Square. Solidarity events are also planned in other cities across the Czech Republic.
