The 317th Prague derby between Sparta and Slavia could directly decide the Czech league title this time. While Slavia can secure the championship with a victory, Sparta are fighting to prevent their city rivals from celebrating the title in their own stadium.
On Saturday, all of the Czech Republic will be watching the now 317th Prague derby. This time, the prestigious clash could even directly decide the championship title.
The equation is relatively simple: Should Slavia Praha win the derby on Saturday, the club would already be crowned Czech champions with three matches remaining in the season. Slavia would therefore defend the title – and the celebrations could begin directly in front of the home crowd in Eden and in front of arch-rivals Sparta. A title win straight after the derby? The last time that happened was when Sparta achieved it more than a quarter of a century ago, in the 1999/2000 season.
If the match ends in a draw, the gap between the two Prague rivals would remain at eight points. In that case, Slavia would still need only one more point from their remaining three matches to secure the league title mathematically. Brian Priske’s side therefore need a victory to keep at least some tension in the title race.

Sparta striker Kuchta still waiting for a goal against former club Slavia
Jan Kuchta is once again at the centre of attention ahead of the Prague derby between Sparta and Slavia. The Sparta forward regularly scores in the league, but against his former club the 29-year-old has so far failed to register either a goal or an assist. Now, the most prestigious match of the season could become a major test for him. Sparta Prague are determined to prevent their city rivals from sealing the title early.
The 29-year-old has been among the most prolific strikers in Czech football for years. Kuchta has already scored 86 top-flight goals and has found the net against every current first division side during his career. Only against one opponent is he still waiting for his first goal: Slavia Prague.
Kuchta has a special history with the “Sešívaní”. The striker previously played for Slavia before his transfer – and later his return to Prague from abroad – sparked considerable debate. Since then, the relationship between Kuchta and his former club has been regarded as strained.
