Slavia Prague are Czech football champions once again. However, the title-winning match against Jablonec was overshadowed by the aftermath of the derby scandal against Sparta: due to the clashes, the game at Eden Stadium was played behind closed doors.

Slavia Prague secured another Czech championship title with a convincing 5-1 victory over Jablonec. Yet instead of a jubilant celebration, the club experienced one of the most unusual – and probably saddest – title nights in league history.

Eden was originally supposed to descend into red-and-white euphoria on Saturday evening. Instead, there was near silence after the final whistle on Wednesday night. No celebrations with the fans, no lengthy scenes of jubilation on the pitch – only a few embraces, short cries of joy and a quick walk back to the dressing room accompanied the championship triumph.

Due to the serious incidents during the derby against Sparta Prague, the match against Jablonec took place in front of empty stands. Following the clashes on Saturday, the league’s disciplinary commission (LFA) handed Slavia, among other punishments, four matches behind closed doors. Several Slavia supporters had stormed the pitch shortly before the end of the match and attacked players as well as supporters of the visiting side.

On the pitch, however, the team responded impressively to the incidents. Just a few days after the derby chaos, Slavia delivered a composed performance against Jablonec and mathematically secured the title. This was also helped by Sparta Prague’s 0-0 draw against Pilsen the previous day, which left Slavia uncatchable at the top of the table.

Nevertheless, many Slavia supporters are likely to remember this championship primarily because of the surrounding circumstances. Instead of sporting dominance, the focus has shifted to crowd trouble, security debates and empty stands. Alongside preparations for next season on the pitch, Slavia must now also deal with the difficult task of addressing the incidents involving their own supporters.

Despite everything that has happened, one thing remains clear: the Czech league needs a strong Slavia Prague – successful on the pitch, but also with an environment capable of preventing scenes such as the clashes from the weekend in future.
