After a disappointing second half, the Czech Republic lost 3-0 to hosts Mexico at the FIFA World Cup, finishing bottom of the group with just one point from three matches and exiting the tournament at the group stage.
The Czech national team have been eliminated from the FIFA World Cup in the group stage. In the decisive match, the side coached by Miroslav Koubek suffered a clear 3-0 defeat to hosts Mexico following a disappointing second half. After returning to the World Cup stage for the first time in 20 years, they finish with just one point from three matches.
A vibrant atmosphere filled the legendary Azteca Stadium from the outset in front of a sell-out crowd. Among the approximately 80,000 spectators, around 6,000 Czech fans also provided loud and passionate support throughout the match. The situation before kick-off was clear: only a victory would have secured the Czech Republic a place in the knockout stage. Mexico, meanwhile, had already sealed top spot in the group with two wins.
The team coached by Miroslav Koubek matched their opponents well in the first half. Mexico only began to take control shortly before the break, but goalkeeper Matěj Kovář denied Sánchez with a save in the 39th minute.
The Czechs also started the second half brightly. Tomáš Červ missed a good opportunity shortly after the restart before Mexico took the lead through Chávez in the 55th minute. Just six minutes later, Quiñones made it 2-0 following an unfortunate defensive mistake.
Koubek responded with several substitutions, introducing, among others, Patrik Schick and Tomáš Souček. However, the Czechs were unable to mount a comeback. Instead, substitute Álvaro Fidalgo put the result beyond doubt with a goal in stoppage time to make it 3-0.
The tournament therefore ends in disappointment for head coach Miroslav Koubek. After guiding the team to the World Cup through the play-offs following his appointment during the winter, the hoped-for success at the tournament failed to materialise. The Czech national team will now turn their attention to their next challenge in the UEFA Nations League this autumn.
