Supermarkets and larger shops in the Czech Republic may remain open as usual this Sunday and Monday. The legal ban on trading for larger retail premises does not apply on the public holidays of 5 and 6 July.
On Sunday, 5 July, the Czech Republic commemorates Saints Cyril and Methodius. The two brothers arrived in Great Moravia in the 9th century and played a key role in the Christianisation of the region, as well as in the development of the Slavic literary and cultural tradition. Their legacy remains an important part of Czech and Slavic cultural history.
On Monday, 6 July, the country marks the anniversary of Jan Hus. The reformer was burned at the stake in Constance in 1415 and is regarded as one of the most significant figures in Czech history. His ideas had a major influence on the Hussite movement and the religious development of Bohemia.
Despite the importance of both public holidays, larger shops are not required to close on these days. The Czech law regulating retail and wholesale trading hours imposes restrictions only on certain public holidays. These include New Year's Day, Easter Monday, 8 May, 28 September, 28 October, and Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
The restrictions do not apply on 5 and 6 July. As a result, retail premises with a sales area of more than 200 square metres may also remain open. However, customers are advised to check opening hours in advance, as individual shops and retail chains may choose to adjust their opening times on public holidays.
