Extensive construction works will lead to disruptions to tram services in Prague city centre from mid-July. Motorists should also expect changes to traffic arrangements.
From 18 July to 10 August 2026, tram services between Lazarská, Národní třída, Národní divadlo and Újezd will be completely suspended. The reason is the urgently needed reconstruction of the tram line, whose track bed has reached a safety-critical condition, according to Prague Public Transit Company (DPP).
The construction works will focus on the Lazarská junction, the curved section of track from Spálená Street into Národní třída, and the adjoining sections towards the National Theatre. As part of the project, both the tracks and the track bed will be renewed, and the entire infrastructure will be modernised.

During the approximately three-week construction period, no trams will operate on the affected section. Prague Public Transit Company will carry out the works in several phases. The affected areas include Smetanovo nábřeží – Spálená, Národní – Lazarská, and the Mikulandská – Ostrovní section of Spálená Street.
Road traffic will also be affected by the construction works. On Národní třída, traffic will continue to operate in a single lane towards Spálená. Spálená Street will not be completely closed. Only the section between Národní třída and Purkyňova Street will be closed. Between Purkyňova Street and Lazarská, the existing one-way traffic system will remain in place, although parking spaces will be unavailable during the construction works.
"Disruptions in the city centre are never pleasant. In this case, however, the repairs are necessary. The track bed is in a critical condition. Postponing the works would significantly increase the risk of failures and further traffic disruption. Our goal is to complete the construction works within the planned timeframe and then restore safe and reliable tram services," said Prague Councillor for Transport Vojtěch Ryvola.
Passengers are advised to check the latest service changes before travelling and to allow extra time for journeys through the city centre.
